Brummagem Fare

"Why don't you look at some of the other cities' Rajars?" is something I'm occasionally asked.

Unlike London, where all of the major stations share the same TSA and make it possible to do a straight comparison, other major markets are not so favourable.  Stations such as BRMB and Galaxy have different-sized, TSAs, while Heart, Smooth and Kerrang! are regionals and cover a much larger part of the West Midlands.

What I have done, though, is to take a look at the general performance of stations within the TSA of one of the major stations in Birmingham - in this case 96.4 BRMB - in order to make a like-with-like comparison.

As I'm unable to do the same hourly breakdown as for London I've done it by 'dayparts'.

This graph shows the overall ranking of stations within the market.

(Just out of interest I've also done a similar set of charts using Galaxy's TSA. As you can see, there is a difference in figures between the two TSAs - I told you it can get complicated!)

  1. It's interesting to see the original Heart is still a powerhouse in Birmingham even though it's gotten less Brummy over the years. Meanwhile BBC WM, with it's roster of Birmingham radio legends is languishing below the Kerrang with it's niche format and brand.

  2. Strange to see the 12-4pm figures are higher than those for breakfast. Do people in Birmingham get up late?

  3. @George S - I suspect it's purely a 'statistical anomaly' because it's a 4-hour segment when the other daytime dayparts are 3-hours.

The half-hourly figures tend to follow the usual daytime pattern.

  4. Thanks Paul. Its still strange compared to London where the graph falls hugely after lunch though. Heart in particular must be doing something right to hold their numbers across the full day.

  5. I've just looked a bit more closely at Heart's half-hour figures - although not directly comparable because they're for the whole TSA, not just Birmingham - and they remain fairly stable from around 1030 - 1530. Then the drop-off starts.
